in the 'sound of universe' record shop london's top dj's like gilles peterson, andrew weatherall and patrick forge stock up on rare vinyl releases. the universe specialises in new jazz, soul, funk, breakbeats and reggae. the soul jazz record label sprang from the record shop with releases from old school studio1 reggae to new soul sound from mantronics. since 1997 the label has organised the 100% dynamite party, which happens every saturday at the elektrowerkz. from 21.30 the place is packed until 03.00. soul jazz has a special reggae soundsytem installed at elektowerkz. londons top dj's and mc stars like roots manuva (see picture) support the resident soul jazz crew. roots manuva alias rodney smith grew up in south london. the ninja tune album 'run come save me' is fully packed with london stories told over hip hop and reggae beats. rodney's inspiration came from his childhood. back then he was most impressed by the christening and wedding parties that used dancehall sound systems. sound of the universe is open daily from 11.00-19.00.
