richard ashcroft’s band, the verve, had already split up, when their music suddenly started selling. goaded on by the success, ashcroft made his band mates record another album. urban hymns sold seven million copies and made the verve a super band. after that, the band split up for good. richard ashcroft is now a solo artist, ready to become the godfather of english rock. in his melancholic songs, he speaks about the big themes of love, life and death. the former weirdo from the small town wigan became father in the meantime.
