after the split with new york’s hip hop label payday, jeru releases all his tracks on his own mini-label knowsavage records. jeru manages himself, produces, acts as a&r manager and video director. the nyc underground star damaged his reputation in hip-hop circles in the beginning of the 90’s due to his criticisms oo hip-hop moguls such as the fugees and puff daddy. jeru’s records are modern classics. his tracks belong to the collection of every good hip-hop dj. since jeru’s 94 debut ‘the sun rises in the east’ his vocals & styles are trademark nyc as much as dj premier’s beats or wu-tang’s hardcore attitude. apart from his label jeru is also obsessed with martial arts. the dreadlock mc’s styling hot tip is the malchija hat shop in fort green, brooklyn. the jamaican owners marcus and friends sew hats in the small shop on ancient sewing machines. jeru’s style trademark is the retro-rasta with a small peak. other malchija regulars are the roots, black eyed peas and dancehall star luciano. original handmade designs cost between $70 - 250.
