if time travel back to the second world war sounds interesting to you, check out the u-bahn bunker in spandau. behind an unassuming door in the spandau underground station you’ll find the mother and child bunker. the shelter has room for 6500 people. inside is a first aid facility, compost toilets still intact. after the war the bunker was used as a prison, a refugee camp and a homeless shelter. the berliner unterwelten e.v. offers 90 minutes guided tours, which includes a bunker constructed during the cold war. the tour in spandau is available every first saturday of the month. bring warm clothes, sturdy foot-wear and a torch. they also offer tours of canal systems, underground constructions and escape tunnels from the cold war east germany.
