speed metal kings anthrax got their studio in the quiet new yorker suburb yonkers. guitarist frank bello and drummer charlie benante live nearby. the others commute daily by train to their shift at the studio. at gigi’s, the band stocks up on pizzas and crab sandwiches. gigi makes the best pizza sauce around. in 1980, bass player scott ian named them anthrax, after he heard about the deadly poison in his biology lesson. in those days, everybody else named their bands after iron maiden songs. together with metallica, megadeath and slayer, anthrax are the original creators of speed metal. the guys themselves view their music as hard rock, which is played a bit faster than normal. they made music history, when they collaborated with public enemy. with the re-release of ‘bring the noise’, they created the rap metal genre, which is nowadays being exploited by bands such as limp bizkit with great success. in 1992, singer joey belladonna was replaced by john bush. guitarist rob joined only most recently. after their us tour with judas priest, anthrax produced a live album. their last record was released by tommy boy, a ‘best of’ by universal island.
